Heat Mats - Mid-summer or Early Spring

What’s your temperature preference?

Do you prefer Spring temperatures (warm during the day and cool at night), Mid-Summer (Hot during the day and warm at night), Fall temperatures (Sunny, crisp days and cool nights) or Winter temperatures (Cold day and night)?

Well you seeds are no different than you. Some like it hot, others like it cool, and still others like it downright freezing. This is where heat mats come in. Often you are trying to get a head start with your plants so that when outside conditions are right, you can plant everything in your garden. Some types of flower seeds like temperatures between 75-85 degrees to germinate best, others like 70 degrees and still others prefer 50 - 60 degrees. So how do you accommodate them for their preferred temperature?

For those 70 degree seeds, the average household will have no issue temperatures between 68-72 degrees. For the 50-60 degree seeds, the typical basement or if you have a root cellar are the perfect locations. Now, for those heat loving seeds. Keeping your entire house at 75-85 degrees could be very costly and possibly uncomfortable. So how do you give your seeds the temperature they are looking for? HEAT MATS

A heat mat is a small, thin, plastic sheet with a built-in heating element. You simply plug it in and place your seeds containers on top of it. This gives the seeds the supplemental heat they need while not costing you a fortune. A basic heat mat should give you the temperatures you need. If you have a variety of seeds that require different temperatures, then a more sophisticated heat mat system may be in order. The higher-end heat mat systems include temperature adjustments as well as actual temperature and humidity sensors.
